AbstractEquity in health – The basis for sustainable welfare
In Sweden welfare services such as health care, schools and spatial planning are managed by the municipalities and the county councils. All citizens regardless of gender, age and background should according to law be treated and dealt with in an equal manner. The welfare services have a major impact on population health, which in recent years has developed in a positive direction. At the same time inequalities in health are increasing.
The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) represents the interest of Sweden´s 290 municipalities and 20 county councils. SALAR is currently working to develop methods and strategies in order to reduce inequalities in health. The following activities have been initiated:
National platform for health and health care equity consists of all major national players in health care. The aim is to reverse the trend of increasing inequalities within the health care system.
Joint action for social sustainability – reduce health inequalities consists of 20 municipalities and county councils. The aim is to identify actions to reduce health inequalities in society based on the recommendation of the WHO independent commission on the social determinants of health.
Guidance for equality in governance and management outlines a model for increased equality in governance and management by municipalities and county councils, in order to offer welfare services to the population in a more equal way.
Study project – “Care on equal terms” aims to develop and evaluate methods for a more equal distribution of health promotion and prevention efforts regarding approach, availability and organizational issues within the primary health care service.
